My husband and I were passing through the area and decided to take a short detour to check out this massive piece of machinery (known as Big Brutus). We do that a LOT you know! Things To Do In Kansas
Here you’ll find budget friendly things to do in Kansas! Destinations will be free or cheap so they’re a great addition to your travel itinerary.
Outdoor recreation…
I have had many adventures in the Sunflower State. The state parks certainly offer a variety of recreational fun for outdoor enthusiasts. You can pitch a tent or bring your RV if you’re looking for cheap accommodations. Spend your days hiking various trails or fishing the waters for the next “big one”! Additionally, there are beaches for swimming and places to launch your watercraft!
Is mountain biking your thing? There are trails for you here too! Don’t forget your helmet!
Want to see some Bison in the wild? Wait, you can do that in Kansas?? You sure can! Just keep a safe distance and bring your camera!
Something else that comes to mind when thinking of the Sunflower State are the unique rock formations. There are mushroom rocks, giant rock formations that look like castle walls, and rocks that stretch high into the Kansas sky.
History museums…
There are certainly some cool museums here!! I have been to the Big Brutus Museum more than once. It honors a very large electric shovel that removed dirt and debris off the top of coal veins. You can see his support equipment and impressive trenchwork. Climbing in and out of Big Brutus is an incredible experience, especially if you have children.
A couple other museums that I found impressive are the Combat Air Museum and the Museum of the Kansas National Guard. Both of those are in Topeka and worth visiting if you’re in the area.
BINGO
Also, BINGO! That’s right…find a bingo hall and get your game on. It’s a super fun, thrifty activity you can do in Kansas. You may even win the big prize so consider adding the activity to your itinerary.
